Lexie Sachs, Good Housekeeping’s textile director, has tested dozens of children’s pajamas over the past six years, examining their softness, fit and durability factors such as shrinkage, pilling and color fastness. We also consider cost, child-friendly design and real user reviews when choosing.

Most importantly, we ensure that children’s pajamas pass safety and flammability laws, which means that pajamas either need to be flame-retardant or tight-fitting. You can read more about what to look out for when buying children’s sleepwear at the end of this article, but first of all, here are the best children’s sleepwear for 2021:

Carter's 100% cotton children's pajamas top the list because they are available in a variety of styles and great value for money. Choose short and long sleeves, pants and shorts, nightgowns and jumpsuits. In addition, they come in a wide range of sizes, from premature babies to size 14 children, and there are a lot of prints, so your child will definitely find something they like. 

Our textile director Lexie Sachs said that these pajamas are a must-have for her home and have been in good condition for many years. They can even use them as heirlooms between children, although older children may find these prints too small.  

These children's pajamas are fun and stylish, and they won't break the bank, especially when you are buying them at a discount. Choose from loose pajamas to tight long-sleeved suits, as well as all kinds of prints and colors. 

Although the cost of these pajamas is lower than other pajamas, we find that they can withstand repeated wear and wash. One disadvantage is that some fabrics made of polyester may not be as luxurious as higher-priced brands. 

Gap has printing options suitable for all ages, with a large number of interesting designs, from camouflage to classic designs such as rainbows and stripes. They also provide seasonal prints, fashion patterns, and authorized characters from Disney and Marvel, such as Moana and Star Wars. 

Textile Director Lexie Sachs praised the texture of the fabric, saying "it is thicker and softer than the other suits I use." Although pajamas may be expensive, please pay attention to Gap's regular sales, as the price of these suits usually drops significantly.

We recently awarded these pajamas the 2021 Parenting Award, and they are very popular among our child testers for their comfort and colorful prints. In our tests, they can withstand repeated washings and will not pilling like many blended fabrics. They range in size from 12 months to 10 months old and have long sleeves and pants suits for boys and girls.

They have one-piece double-sided pajamas jumpsuits and jumpsuits, with a tunnel in the abdomen. Both have a full-length zipper closure to make dressing easier. The two-piece suit has snaps on the T-shirt, and the pants have elastic waistbands for a flexible fit. They have basic solid colors such as blue and purple. 

Posh Peanut's fashion prints are so popular that they are often sold out. Popular prints include flowers, dinosaurs, cars, etc., all in fashionable colors. Because of the viscose fabric, the child testers like to be soft and light, not to mention the high attention to details, such as the ruffles on some girls' suits. 

Please note that the brand does call its fabric "bamboo" in some marketing, but it is actually viscose fiber extracted from bamboo (you can read more about our survey of bamboo fabrics here ).  

If your child doesn't like tight pajamas, Old Navy has a wide range of loose pajamas, such as pajamas, unisex jogging pants, pajamas, rompers, etc.  

They are available in various sizes, from 6-12 months to 6T for younger children, and from XS to XL for older children. Many critics say that these children's pajamas are cute and comfortable, but because the looser styles are made of polyester, they may not be as luxurious as other pajamas.  

Despite the high price, Roller Rabbit is still very popular and is known for its unique prints and not-so-young patterns. The exquisite design makes them very suitable for the whole family, fortunately, you can purchase matching family suits. 

The brand offers stockings and pajamas in sizes 0-9 months, children's suits in sizes 12-18 months to 14 months, and various adult styles and sizes from XXS to XL.   

These J.Crew children’s pajamas are very popular and look like mini versions of adult pajamas. The adult-inspired design includes a notched collar with contrasting piping and classic prints such as plaid, stripes and flowers. They are available in sizes from XXS to XL and are suitable for sizes from 2 to 16. For an additional $10, you can add a monogram. 

These 4-piece sets from Amazon Essentials mainly have long sleeves and pants suits, but there are also some short sleeves and shorts to choose from. They provide interesting printed themes for boys and girls, such as deep sea, happy campers and meteors. 

These collections have more than 2,800 combined reviews and 4.7 points. Shoppers really like its quality and value, even though the reviews say they look small and may want to increase the size.  

According to federal flammability laws, children’s pajamas need to be flame-retardant or tight-fitting. Although all children’s pajamas should pass safety and flammability laws, this is not always the case. In fact, we found that pajamas from small brands and online markets do not meet these requirements. Here are the things to keep in mind when you shop:

• Cotton pajamas should be tight-fitting. Since cotton is flammable, clothing should fit snugly to minimize the chance of loose fabric floating on the flame. In addition, the flame does not spread easily because there is less oxygen around the fabric.

• Loose pajamas should be polyester. Synthetic fibers are inherently flame retardant, so they are most commonly found in pajamas and loose suits. If you see loose cotton pajamas, it either means they have added flame-retardant chemicals or they do not meet the required standards.

• Pay attention to pajamas marked with clothing. In order to circumvent flammability laws, some pajamas brands label pajamas as home wear or other daily wear, even if they are used for sleeping. Although they are considered safe to wear during the day, please be aware that they may not pass the standard.
